What is a Fab Lab?

"A Fab Lab (fabrication laboratory) is a fully kitted fabrication workshop which gives everyone in the community from small children through to entrepreneurs and businesses, the capability to turn their ideas and concepts into reality."

Fablab Adiss Ababa has been chosen to host a Fab Lab, a community inventors' workshop where new products can be built by both businesses and individuals in Ethiopia. It is located in Addis Ababa University; Alle school of fine arts and design around 4 killo next to natural science campus.

Fab labs provide widespread access to modern means for invention. They began as an outreach project from MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA). CBA assembled millions of dollars in machines for research in digital fabrication, ultimately aiming at developing programmable molecular assemblers that will be able to make almost anything. Fab labs fall between these extremes, comprising roughly fifty thousand dollars in equipment and materials that can be used today to do what will be possible with tomorrow’s personal fabricators.

The FabLab stake holders in Addis Ababa University are three institutes that are ASFAD/ Alle School of fine arts and design, AAiT/Addis Ababa institute of Technology and EiABC/Ethiopian institute of Architecture, Building and Construction.
